A Hashtag with a View

On the seafront promenade where the Old Town ends and the open sea begins, a bold red, white, and blue structure stands unapologetically in the sun: #ILoveNice. It is neither ancient nor architectural. It makes no claim to historical grandeur. And yet, it has become one of the most photographed symbols of the city—modern, playful, and strangely essential.

Installed in 2016 as a gesture of unity and resilience, the sign quickly evolved from a temporary installation into a permanent emblem. Positioned on the Quai Rauba-Capeù, it offers the perfect alignment: behind it, the Baie des Anges unfurls in a gentle arc; in front, the cascade of ochre rooftops signals the start of the Old Town. The location is no accident. This is where sea meets stone, and where visitors pause instinctively.

People come here for the view—but they stay for the photo. Couples pose at sunrise. Children climb the letters. Solo travelers linger, waiting for the light to soften. The hashtag, a symbol born of screens and swipes, becomes paradoxically physical. Solid. Touchable. A shared ritual among strangers.

Over time, the sign has adapted. Its colors shift subtly for national holidays, awareness campaigns, or city events. It has become a canvas as much as a slogan—a way for Nice to speak to the world without speaking at all.

And while some may dismiss it as a social media trap, the truth is gentler. The #ILoveNice sign is not about vanity. It is about place. About presence. About saying: I was here. I stood at this edge of the Mediterranean. I looked out. I loved what I saw.

In a city of domes and frescoes, palaces and promenades, this bold typographic gesture offers something rare: a shared moment, accessible to all, rooted not in history but in now.
